The URL of a webpage is its unique address on the Internet. It’s how people access your content when they click on a link in a search engine, a social media site, or someone else’s webpage.
Some software doesn’t spend a lot of time designing URLs that are nice to look at, which is a shame. It may be a small detail, but it does have an impact. Here’s an example of an unfriendly URL:
It doesn’t tell you much except that it’ll take you to example.com, and that the item has the mysterious number 13446. Here’s a friendly URL:
This URL immediately makes more sense. The mystery number is still in there (in Cartanium it’s your product’s SKU), but you can tell right away that the page will be about a new valve cover seal for a 1967 Ford Mustang.
This has a number of benefits:
It increases user trust — A user is more likely to believe your page will be helpful if they can see that the URL they’re about to click on has words that are relevant to their search. Search engines display the URL of every search result just under the title, and they’ll even bold-face the user’s search words if it can find them in the URL.
It boosts your ranking in search results — This doesn’t matter as much as it used to, but search engines still trust your page slightly more if they can find a user’s search words in the URL. This increases your chance of getting on page 1 of the search results.
It’s easier to type — If someone finds your URL written down somewhere, it’s much easier to remember and type if it consists of real words rather than strange symbols.
What sort of friendly URLs does Cartanium create?
Cartanium creates friendly URLs for:
Inventory items — In the example above, the product’s title becomes part of the friendly URL. But we even create special URLs and pages for each product-to-vehicle application . This means that if your valve cover seal matches 1967 – 1970 Ford Mustangs with 390 and 428 big-block engines, you’ll get all these URLs:
That’s a lot of ways for your product to get found.
Categories — Cartanium displays your category, subcategory, and part type clearly in the URL:
Vehicles (coming soon) — Cartanium will give you landing pages for each of your vehicles, with quick links to all the items for those vehicles:
